The free characters Honkai: Star Rail provides you with are actually very good for clearing story content, but it’s also important to have multiple characters and teams ready to take on different combat scenarios, as even the best characters can’t brute force their way through everything.

We consider these SS-tier characters to be the best of the best in Star Rail due to their incredible support capabilities, debuffs, or passive and active attacks that add more benefits to your party than just damage potential against enemies weak to their Element.

Aventurine	5-Star	Imaginary	The Preservation		With a guaranteed shield for the entire team with his Skill, enhancement to follow-up attacks, Crit Damage, and Effect Resistance, Aventurine is an all-in-one Preservation character with some Harmony path abilities. Add his potential as a damage dealer himself through his Ultimate and follow-up attacks, and he’s an excellent pick for your sustain slots, especially if the enemies have an Imaginary weakness, or your main DPSs use follow-up attacks.
Fugue	5-Star	Fire	The Nihility		Fugue is basically one big cheat when it comes to building Break and Super Break teams in Honkai: Star Rail, as the ‘Foxian Prayer’ state she applies to one ally with her Skill lets them reduce the Toughness of an enemy – no matter what their Weakness is. Fugue also reduces enemies’ defence when a character with ‘Foxian Prayer’, and activates the Super Break Damage effect when allies attack Weakness Broken enemy enemy targets. She’s also a pretty nice Fire attacker and Breaker in her own right, as she scales off attack, and her Ultimate reduces Toughness no matter what Weakness an enemy has.
Fu Xuan	5-Star	Quantum	The Preservation		Invest in Fu Xuan’s health stat enough and she’s one of the most useful characters in Star Rail, as she acts like a tank for your team. When her Skill is activated, Fu Xuan takes damage meant for other team members, and then when she falls below 50% HP, her talent activates and she heals herself. As long as you’re careful with building this talent back up again, Fu Xuan can help keep your team alive for a long, long time!
Lingsha	5-Star	Fire	The Abundance		Lingsha is basically a souped-up version of Gallagher, which should quickly explain how good she can be in Break and Super Break teams. She also has a little follow-up damage potential, with her pet Fuyuan. Add to this her incredible healing abilities, and Lingsha is one powerful healer to put on a team. So powerful, her healing just seems like an afterthought (a very useful afterthought, though!)
Robin	5-Star	Physical	The Harmony		Robin does a bit of everything! She boosts the party’s damage, attack, follow-up attacks, Crit Rate and Crit Damage, and also allows all allies to take immediate action. We’d give her an SS-tier ranking for her singing alone, so we’re glad the rest of her incredible kit matches up to her vocal prowess.
Ruan Mei	5-Star	Ice	The Harmony		Ruan Mei combines the best of other Harmony characters while adding her own unique Break Effect debuff to enemies. Her Skill ups the damage dealt and Weakness Break Efficiency of all allies, and her Ultimate applies a field that increases the party’s All-Type Resistance Penetration and applies an effect that delays enemies recovering from when Weakness Broken. All of these benefits – along with her passive Talents that increase your team’s Speed, Break Effect, and damage – makes Ruan Mei an amazing Harmony character for buffing your entire team’s damage while also delaying enemies’ turns.
Sparkle	5-Star	Wind	The Harmony		While Sparkle isn’t essential if you already have good Harmony characters built, she makes almost everything a breeze by providing a huge amount of extra Skill Points while boosting the damage of your team, advancing turns by 50%. She gets even better in Mono Quantum teams thanks to a bonus Trace. Sparkle also opens up different team lineups so you can pair multiple DPS characters with her, without having to worry about Skill Points. Or, you can get an unbelievable amount of damage from one character by pairing her with other supports and debuffers with a solo DPS. A very useful and versatile character to have, especially if you lack other good Harmony options.
Sunday	5-Star	Imaginary	The Harmony		Sunday is basically Bronya, Tingyun, Hanya, and a Summon buffer combined in Star Rail. His Skill cleanses, and boosts a character’s Crit Rate and damage dealt (with those with a Summon getting an extra boost) and lets them immediately take action, and his Ultimate regenerates Energy for a selected character, and turns that character’s Summon (if they have one) into ‘The Beatified’, which increases their Crit Damage. Oh, and Sunday gains a Skill point if he uses his Skill on ‘The Beatified’. To say Sunday is a good Harmony character is selling it short. Unless you run a DOT or hyperspecific Break team, he’s one of the most versatile and effective team members in the entire game.
Topaz	5-Star	Fire	The Hunt		If you play a character/team who use a lot of follow-up attacks (FUA), Topaz is their ideal teammate, as she passively boosts their follow-up attacks with her kit while also getting her Summon pal Numby to perform follow-up attacks too. Along with her own personal fire damage and usefulness in the Simulated Universe and exploring the overworld, she’s a fantastic FUA pick for your team. Her usefulness has only grown over the years, with so many more FUA and Summon buffers being added to the game.
Tribbie	5-Star	Quantum	The Harmony		Tribbie is a fantastic Harmony character who provides All-Type Resistance Penetration buffs to the team, while actually having a lot of personal damage herself, and has the capacity to trigger a Follow-Up Attack when allies use an Ultimate. She’s also easy to play, as all you really have to do is trigger her ‘Numinosity’ buff and build HP on Tribbie to make her the best she can be. A brilliant pick for almost any team comp!

Honkai Star Rail tier list for S-tier characters

These S-tier characters are incredibly good at what they’re designed for, and can be used in a variety of different combat situations past their Elemental type – but they’re either not as good as similar functioning characters in the SS-tier, or they have slight limitations that hold them back.

Acheron	5-Star	Lightning	The Nihility		As long as you understand that Acheron builds towards her Ultimate by debuffs building on enemies, and not from traditional Energy Recharge methods, then she’s probably the easiest powerful DPS to understand in Star Rail. Just bring along another Nihility character or two to ensure debuffs are getting applied regularly, and you can Unleash Acheron’s devastating Ultimate at a quick pace. Remember that DOTs count as debuffs, so Acheron can slot into your premade DOT teams as quite the huge sub DPS as well. Just like Kafka, the only real downside to Acheron is that you need to play her with specific characters (Nihility) to get the most out of her huge potential.
Aglaea	5-Star	Lightning	The Remembrance		As the only Remembrance DPS, Aglaea definitely has a place in your team as a hypercarry if you have her best support characters. Like many DPS characters though, she’s easily replaced with other characters – but Aglaea definitely doesn’t disappoint when it comes to raw damage potential.
Bronya	5-Star	Wind	The Harmony		Want another turn? Bronya’s skill dispels one ally’s debuff and lets you advance their turn by 100%, essentially letting you swap to a character who already had a turn. This basically means you can have two goes with a DPS, healing, or support ability. Her Ultimate and Technique will also buff attack and Crit damage for the whole party, making her useful in the majority of parties in Star Rail.
Feixiao	5-Star	Wind	The Hunt		If you like follow-up attacks, Feixiao’s your ideal DPS main, as her Talent lets her perform a follow-up attack after an ally hits an enemy. This makes her ideal for your dedicated follow-up attack teams, but as she’s on the Hunt path, Feixiao is also very strong against single targets, like bosses. She makes up for the lack of AOE because of her Talent, but she definitely feels better to play when there’s less enemies on the field.
Firefly	5-Star	Fire	The Destruction		The Super Break Damage meta is here! As long as you have enough Break Damage built on your Firefly and pair her with the right teammates (which includes the free Harmony Trailblazer), Firefly is a DPS force to be reckoned with. You’ll want to have enemies Weakness Broken as often as possible, and have Firefly in her Ultimate state to cause the absolute most damage she can, but even without these core kit requirements, Firefly holds her own. She can even implant a Fire weakness, making her useful in a lot of combat situations, including your Memory of Chaos, Simulated Universe, and Pure Fiction runs.
Huohuo	5-Star	Wind	The Abundance		Huhuo provides great healing for your team through her Skill, but she’s also a secret Harmony character really, as her Ultimate regenerates Energy for everyone on the team but her, and ups their attack stat as well. The gains to Energy and attack that Huohuo provides means that she can replace Harmony or debuffing Nihility characters on some teams, freeing up a slot. Or, she can boost your DPS even further if you pair her with other excellent supports.
Kafka	5-Star	Lightning	The Nihility		Kafka Shocks enemies to cause DoT, has a little AoE damage, and performs a follow up attack when other party members use their Basic attack, but her best perk boosts the damage of every DoT effect on an enemy. This means she’s even better when paired with teammates who apply Shock, Wind Shear, Bleed, or Burn. Her numbers might not immediately look as impressive as some other DPS character, but Kafka’s DoT attacks create both immediate results and delayed damage and follow up attacks – adding up to some impressive force. The only downside to her is that you need to build other DoT characters for Kafka to reach her full potential, which can take a lot of resources.
Luocha	5-Star	Imaginary	The Abundance		Luocha is a unique Abundance character as his healing capabilities actually scale off attack. Luocha applies a special Field when he reaches two Abyss Flower stacks which heal allies when they attack. Although he doesn’t heal with his Ultimate, it applies Imaginary damage to all enemies and dispels one buff from them, and after investing in his Traces, Luocha is the best passive healer in the game. All you have to do is keep attacking and your party will continue to automatically heal, no Skill Points required. As healers are so important in the hardest battles, Luocha is a fantastic addition to any team in need of one.
Pela	4-Star	Ice	The Nihility		Pela is a very good pick for almost any team, as she debuffs enemies while gaining Energy with her Skill, which is useful against annoying Elites and bosses. Her Ultimate is also incredibly useful, as it reduces the defence of all enemies while applying a little Ice damage, creating a nice opening for your AOE damage dealers, especially if they’re Ice attackers. She’s slightly less useful against single target enemies, but only because there are other support characters (like Silver Wolf) who can be more effective in this situation, especially if the target isn’t weak to Ice.
Rappa	5-Star	Imaginary	The Erudition		An Erudition, Imaginary attacker who ignores Weakness and focuses on Break Effect? And has the potential to deal Super Break Damage? Hello Pure Fiction’s new best friend. Although Rappa’s cool first-person perspective looks like a gimmick, she is actually very useful in situations where you need to attack a lot of enemies, especially in Break Teams, as this is her focus. Don’t forget to build her attack though, so you can take advantage of her third bonus trace and increase her Break Damage even more.
Remembrance Trailblazer	5-Star	Ice	The Remembrance		As a free support, the Remembrance Trailblazer is a great option for advancing forward your team’s turns, and increasing Crit Damage for your team. The only real issue with them at the moment is that you can’t use other Paths of the Trailblazer while you have their Remembrance form in an active team.
The Herta	5-Star	Ice	The Erudition		If you enjoy using Erudition characters (or you have a lot), then The Herta is an excellent choice to pair alongside them, as your team gets extra boosts if you use The Herta with at least two other Erudition allies. She’s a great attacker in her own right, and is able to immediately take action again after using her Ultimate. While The Herta does well across all endgame combat modes, as an Erudition specialist, she’s particularly good when up against lots of enemies.
Tingyun	4-Star	Lightning	The Harmony		Pairing Tingyun with a high DPS character ups both of their attacks when she uses her Skill, and her Ultimate is incredibly useful, restoring Energy to one ally while increasing their damage. A fantastic 4-Star support who can also apply a little lightning damage when required.
Trailblazer	5-Star	Imaginary	The Harmony		The Harmony Trailblazer allows allies to use Super Break Damage while an enemy is weakness broken, which boosts damage . Paired with someone like Ruan Mei who can extend weakness broken periods, or a character like Xueyi who excels at quickly reducing enemy toughness, and the Harmony version of the Trailblazer becomes a huge asset to your team! They can even help as your only buffer, and they’re free as part of the story, so they are well worth building.

Honkai Star Rail tier list for A-tier characters

These characters have a lot of potential to excel in their perfect combat scenarios or team comps, but they either have limitations that make them awkward to use, another character does what they do better, or they aren’t versatile enough to fit in multiple teams.

Argenti	5-Star	Physical	The Erudition		Argenti is a very easy character to master, as all you have to do is build to his second, more powerful, Ultimate and then unleash it for huge AOE Physical damage. All you need to worry about is his Skill Point and Energy requirements, which can be worked around with by building the correct team. Argenti’s value goes up when facing lots of enemies (like in Pure Fiction), as his passives boost damage even further in multi-target scenarios.
Black Swan	5-Star	Wind	The Nihility		Just as you’d expect, Black Swan works very well with Kafka due to her implantation and boost of DOTs, and she has a very easy playstyle. Black Swan can also work well on her own due to the way her DOT stacks work – especially in the Simulated Universe when you get the right Nihility blessings. With an easy playstyle and natural synergy with other Nihility characters, Black Swan is an excellent pick for your Nihility teams across all modes – Memory of Chaos, Simulated Universe, and Pure Fiction.
Blade	5-Star	Wind	The Destruction		Blade is an incredibly powerful character to have on your team, consuming his own HP to up the damage potential of his attacks, while also having the ability to heal himself. He’s basically a Harmony, Abundance, and Destruction character rolled into one, but you need to be very careful when managing Blade’s health, and even though he can heal himself, you should almost always bring along a healer to help Blade stay alive during the fight. With the right team, Blade is up there as one of the best attackers in the whole game, but he’s a high risk, high reward type of attacker.
Boothill	5-Star	Physical	The Hunt		Armed with a revolver and suppressed potty mouth, Boothill is very useful for his Physical Weakness implantation and single-target DPS attacks. He’s also great at reducing the Toughness of enemies quickly, but his single-target focus is an issue for your Pure Fiction needs. Still, he’s a great unit to see you through Memory of Chaos and the Simulated Universe! That weakness implantation is an incredibly useful skill to have.
Dr Ratio	5-Star	Imaginary	The Hunt		Dr Ratio is an amazing single-target attacker who can fit into a lot of different team compositions in Star Rail. Under the right circumstances he launches follow-up attacks when other allies attack a marked enemy. So, you can slot him in with other attackers, or turn him into a hyper carry DPS with Harmony and Nihility characters – just make sure the enemies have lots of debuffs to increase Dr Ratio’s damage to the max.
Gallagher	4-Star	Fire	The Abundance		You need to unlock Gallagher’s second Eidolon to unlock his Cleanse ability, but once you do, he’s a brilliant healer/secret Harmony character, along with his surprisingly good damage numbers. Think of Gallagher as a mini Fire version of Luocha, who just so happens to also increase the Effect Resistance and Break Damage of the team, and lower enemies attacks with his enhanced basic attack, and you’ll understand why he’s such a good Abundance character.
Hanya	4-Star	Physical	The Harmony		If you find managing Skill Points annoying, then Hanya is a fantastic pick for generating more Skill Points while also buffing your characters’ damage and speed. She works incredibly well when paired with Skill-hungry DPS characters, but as other supports can also help with Skill management if played right, Hanya is more of an alternate option than she is an essential pick. Still, if you want an easier time unleashing your powerful attacks, then Hanya is a great Harmony teammate.
Himeko	5-Star	Fire	The Erudition		A large AOE damage dealer who launches follow up attacks if allies break enemy weaknesses, Himeko is a fantastic pick when up against large waves of enemies weak to fire (like in Pure Fiction), but she actually holds her own in single-target encounters too with a decent Skill. Her Ultimate is a big nuke of Fire damage, but it also regenerates her Energy, meaning she can get it back pretty quickly under the right circumstances – especially when you equip the right Relics. Make sure to break enemies’ weaknesses often with the rest of your team to activate her follow-up attacks as often as possible.
Imbibitor Lunae	5-Star	Imaginary	The Destruction		Imbibitor’s Lunae’s damage output is one of the best in Star Rail, but to balance his amazing DPS potential, Imbibitor Lunae uses up a lot of Skill points, even with his unique kit that allows him to spend build-up stacks instead of Skill Points. He’s a great DPS to have on your team against all enemies, but you really have to work on his build, and balance Skill Points with ideal teams to make the most out of his damage potential.
Jade	5-Star	Quantum	The Erudition		Jade is a perfect companion for any AOE attacker, as when she uses her Skill on them to make them a ‘Debt Collector’, Quantum damage will also be applied to all enemies that character hits. She also builds Charges when she and her Debt Collector attacks, unleashing an AOE follow-up attack when she reaches eight Charge points. This follow-up attack also increases Jade’s personal Crit Damage. You just have to be careful with Jade in your party, as she takes HP from her Debt Collector when they attack. This actually makes her great with characters who benefit from HP loss, like Blade.
Jingliu	5-Star	Ice	The Destruction		Jingliu is yet another high DPS Destruction character, but you have to ensure you’re entering her Spectral Transmigration state and attacking as much as possible before it ends to get the absolute best burst damage from her. She can also be paired with characters who benefit from losing health (like Blade) to make double DPS teams – a rarity in the current meta! Her lack of Skill Point usage is also a huge advantage, meaning Jingliu’s team comps have more variety than someone like Imbibitor Lunae.
Jing Yuan	5-Star	Lightning	The Erudition		Jing Yuan may be of The Erudition path, but he actually packs quite the Lightning punch against single target enemies. He is a very skill hungry character to have on your team, and you need to make sure you’re building his Lightning-Lord stacks for maximum damage potential. However, if you bring the right team with him and carefully manage your skill points, Jing Yuan is a fantastic DPS to build. His only downsides are that he needs his signature Light Cone in order to compete with the likes of S-tier DPS characters, and that Relics don’t buff him as much as those in S and SS-tier.
Lynx	4-Star	Quantum	The Abundance		Lynx is a desirable healer because she both heals your party, and draws enemy attacks to the character healed by her Skill, but only if they are of the Destruction or Preservation path. As these paths tend to benefit your party by being attacked, it’s a win-win situation. As a bonus, Lynx can even dispel defuffs for your whole team when using her Ultimate. She may not have the raw healing stats of somebody like Bailu or Luocha, but she makes up for it in other ways.
March 7th	4-Star	Imaginary	The Hunt		March 7th’s Hunt Path is great if you want to deal some sub DPS damage with your main attacker, or help with breaking enemies Toughness quicker. Here unique mechanics means March assigns one character her Shifu when her Skill is used, and if that character is on The Erudition, Destruction, or Hunt path, then March deals additional damage based on the Shifu’s Combat Type. If they’re on The Harmony, Nihility, Preservation, or Abundance path instead, then the Toughness Reduction for March’s damage increases. March’s Hunt path also increases the Crit Damage and Break Effect of her Shifu, and she launches her own attack when she has enough charges. This all makes March 7th’s Hunt path a great free-to-play support and damage option.
Moze	4-Star	Lightning	The Hunt		Moze is a great follow-up support character, similar to Numby in Topaz’ kit, as if an enemy is marked as ‘Prey’, Moze consumes Charge to launch a follow-up attack. He gets even better with his Eidolons, particularly at E1, which helps with energy needs.
Qingque	4-Star	Quantum	The Erudition		The random nature of Qingque’s kit holds her back from reaching her full potential at times, but she’s incredibly valuable when brought up to E6. Her whole kit revolves around getting four of the same tiles to boost her attack damage, with her Skill allowing her to draw more tiles and helpfully not ending her turn so you can normal attack as well. As this is all luck, it’s hard to ensure Qingque does the Quantum damage you need. If you don’t mind repeating battles though, she can clinch the win for you in specific situations.
Seele	5-Star	Quantum	The Hunt		Hunt characters usually only excel at single-target damage when an enemy is weak to their Element. Seele laughs in the face of this logic and is actually best used in multi-target scenarios due to her passive ability giving her another turn when she kills an enemy. This can be exploited with Seele’s Ultimate to give her four turns in a row. Pair her with supports who increase her Speed, Crit, or attack stats and Seele can help you through more combat scenarios than just enemies weak to Quantum.
Silver Wolf	5-Star	Quantum	The Nihility		Silver Wolf goes the extra mile as a Nihility debuffer and can actually implant a new elemental weakness in enemie.! This is particularly good against boss and elite enemies in the Forgotten Hall and Simulated Universe when you don’t have a good enough damage-dealer with an element the enemy is weak to. The only downside to Silver Wolf is that the element she implants can’t be controlled, it picks randomly from your current party line-up. You might have to repeat battles a few times, but that’s a small price to pay when you know any of your damage-dealers can get the job done eventually with Silver Wolf on the team. She’s particularly good in teams made up exclusively of Quantum characters.
Welt	5-Star	Imaginary	The Nihility		It’s Welt’s speed reduction that makes him such a desirable character – especially if you have characters who already have a high base speed in your party. Less speed for the enemy equals more turns for your characters, which can give you bonus attack, healing, or other support abilities more often. His slowing Technique is also one of the best in the whole game, giving you a big advantage right at the start of a fight.
Yunli	5-Star	Physical	The Destruction		Yunli’s kit is designed around Taunting enemies and then using her Counter on them, which is made more manageable by her ability to heal herself with her own Skill. She also regenerates Energy when attacked, making her Ultimate easier to obtain, and reducing Energy Recharge requirements on her Relics, freeing her up for more attack boosts. Add to all this her AOE Physical damage, and Yunli is a great unique pick for your teams in need of a Physical attacker.

Honkai Star Rail tier list for B-tier characters

Our B-tier characters are very good against their ideal opponents, while also tending to have some sort of special ability that can make them a viable option – though maybe not the best – during other combat scenarios. Keep in mind that increasing the Eidolons of most of these characters can boost their usefulness quite a lot.

Asta	4-Star	Fire	The Harmony		Asta is a deceptively good pick for your team. Her Ultimate increases the speed of all party members, meaning some can take an extra turn if their own speed stats are high enough. This is really useful, as having even one extra turn can change a loss into a win, especially in the Forgotten Hall. However, you really have to invest in her Traces, build, and team composition to get the best potential out of Asta.
Bailu	5-Star	Lightning	The Abundance		Healers are pretty essential for almost all combat scenarios in Star Rail, especially if you’re in battles that take a long time to clear, like boss fights or the Simulated Universe. Her Skill healing is great, restoring health to multiple allies, and her passive ability to revive a fallen ally once per battle makes her a fantastic Abundance character to have. Bailu’s major downside, however, is her lack of cleansing ability.
Clara	5-Star	Physical	The Destruction		Clara is an interesting character to play, requiring you to really think about your team composition for her to be the most effective, as her helpful buddy Svarog counters with an attack whenever Clara is hit. This means a good shielder or healer is essential for most Clara teams, as you want to keep her alive to ensure Svarog can use his strong Physical attacks. Baiting enemies to attack Clara will increase your DPS potential with her, as long as she survives the fight.
Gepard	5-Star	Ice	The Preservation		Geaprd shines in single-target or two-target encounters due to his ability to freeze enemies and apply ice damage over time. His Ultimate is the real appeal, however, giving the whole party shields. Gepard’s Talent is also very handy, letting him revive once after receiving a killing blow. He can sometimes replace a healer in shorter battles, as enemies can’t attack you if they’re frozen in place, freeing up another support or DPS slot. However, pairing Gepard with a healer can also see you through longer, tougher battles.
March 7th	4-Star	Ice	The Preservation		Don’t underestimate March 7th! She is versatile enough to protect your party even when up against enemies not weak to Ice. This is because March provides a little bit of everything when protecting your team. She can shield an ally with her Skill (which can be used to bait enemies to attack a particular character), auto-hit back when a shielded ally is attacked, and freeze whole mobs of enemies with her Ultimate. She’s particularly useful in longer battles, helping to draw out the fighting to let your DPS characters deal with the enemies. Buffing her abilities in the Simulated Universe can turn her into an even better character.
Xueyi	4-Star	Quantum	The Destruction		Xueyi is a very useful 4-Star attacker because although she’s Quantum, her Ultimate ignores the Weakness Type of an enemy and reduces their Toughness no matter what they’re actually weak to. This – along with her AOE Quantum damage and follow-up attacks – make Xueyi useful in many combat scenarios if paired with good supports to boost her damage even further. She may not pack as big of a punch as 5-Star damage dealers, but her versatility and ease-of-use make her a fantastic pick in a variety of battles, particularly in the Simulated Universe and its additional modes.
Yukong	4-Star	Imaginary	The Harmony		Yukong is a very useful Harmony character to build, as her Skill increases the attack stat of all allies, and her Ultimate increases the Crit Rate and Crit Damage of all allies, as long as Roaring Bowstrings is active. That’s the only downside to Yukong, as you need to be careful in your rotation to ensure Roaring Bowstrings is active when your DPS is using their most powerful moves. Yukong isn’t as easy to use as Tingyun, but she’s just as effective at upping the potential of your characters who benefit from increased Crit Rate and Damage – and she’s a great sub DPS character in her own right, pairing very well with other Imaginary characters.

Honkai Star Rail tier list for C-tier characters

Our C-tier characters have a place in some specific situations, but offer very little – or no – additional benefits other than their Element type. They’re not bad, but they don’t have anything special about them either.

In alphabetical order, here’s our Honkai: Star Rail tier list for every C-tier character as of version 3.2 in May 2025:

Guinaifen	4-Star	Fire	The Nihility		If you need Burn DoTs in your team, Guinaifen’s your go-to pick. This means she’s a fantastic teammate to pair with Kafka. As a bonus, Guinaifen also increases the damage an enemy takes when her Firekiss effect is on them, making her a mini debuffer alongside her strength as a DoT applicator.
Herta	4-Star	Ice	The Erudition		With the introduction of Pure Fiction, Herta has become an excellent pick for her AOE Ice damage, as if an ally gets an enemy’s health under a certain threshold she’ll do a follow up attack. Herta’s a bit of a one-trick-pony, but the trick is very effective if an enemy is weak to ice, or has a very low health bar like the mobs encountered in Pure Fiction. She can also work well in the Simulated Universe, but you have to get the ideal Blessings and team her with characters like March 7th to progress far.
Luka	4-Star	Physical	The Nihility		True to Luka’s background as a Belobog fighter, he’s a great pick for causing bleed damage in single or low target scenarios. Levelled up, he also gets energy back for using Fighting Stacks (which he should be doing regularly), giving him more chances to use his Ultimate which causes big damage and actually debuffs the target too by increasing their damage received. Add on that Luka can dispel one buff by using us Skill on an enemy (after unlocking a passive ability) and he’s handy to have in more situations than it might seem like at first.
Misha	4-Star	Ice	The Destruction		As a solo 4-Star attacker Misha is very underwhelming, but he does work well with other attackers who use a lot of Skill Points, as he outputs more damage the more hit points is Ultimate is charged to. Think of Misha as a secondary DPS on your team who can fill in as a flex slot for teams that use a lot of Skill Points – and he works particularly well in Freeze teams, especially in the Simulated Universe. The main issue with Misha is that putting a Harmony or Nihility character in your flex slot works just as well, and often better. However, if you happen to have a team that uses Skill Points and can provide teamwide energy restoration, then Misha works very well.
Natasha	4-Star	Physical	The Abundance		As a healer, Natasha is an essential character to build if you don’t have other healers – especially at the beginning of the game. Her Skill heals and dispels one debuff from a single ally, while her Ultimate heals the whole party. She may not have any flashy abilities, but healing your team is required to clear a lot of content.
Sampo	4-Star	Wind	The Nihility		If you need AOE Wind damage and DoT, Sampo’s your man. His Technique is also useful for slowing enemies at the start of a fight to give your party more turns as a result. Sampo’s AoE Wind damage from his Skill is slightly random though, so it might not hit every enemy. For the most effective Wind damage, you’ll want to activate his Ultimate as much as possible. He is particularly good when paired with Kafka.
Serval	4-Star	Lightning	The Erudition		A very easy character to play, Serval is a great pick if you need AOE Lightning damage for your team. She can shock enemies with her attacks, and when she hits a shocked enemy, Serval will cause more damage. Although she provides nothing else, there are so many enemies weak against Lightning in the main story, especially the early parts, and a lot in the Forgotten Hall and Simulated Universe modes too. It all makes Serval a great ‘basic’ character, due to her very easy and effective kit. Serval is another character who works best with Kafka.
Sushang	4-Star	Physical	The Hunt		As Sushang gets another turn after using her Skill, she’s very good against single-target enemies weak to Physical, and can even help out when they’re not weak. There are benefits to bringing Sushang in multi-target encounters too, as her Technique hits all enemies at the start of a battle, and when any enemy has their break bar destroyed, her speed increases, which can give her another extra turn. There’s a bit of randomness to her Skill’s damage, but all-in-all, Sushang is a fantastic damage dealer for a 4-Star.
Trailblazer	5-Star	Fire	The Preservation		The Fire variation of The Trailblazer is a fantastic tank to have on your team that draws enemy attacks with their Skill. Gaining stacks of Magma Will by attacking or blocking, then unleashing powerful fire damage is also useful when up against tough Elites, particularly if they’re weak to fire. You’ll have a tougher time taking advantage of the Trailblazer’s damage output when up against those not weak to fire, but they can still be effective at baiting attacks.
Yanqing	5-Star	Ice	The Hunt		Yanqing is good against single-target enemies weak to Ice, but he can double up as a mini support due to his chance to freeze enemies when an Empathic Sword Link is activated by using his Skill. If his freezing and attack buffs were more reliable, we’d place Yanqing higher, due to his usefulness and damage potential against Ice weaknesses, but the random nature and dampened attack potential when compared to other DPS characters means he’s can be an unpredictable ally to have.

Honkai Star Rail tier list for D-tier characters

Our D-tier characters have one or two functions that they perform well in, like farming for materials, or breaking weakness bars, but they don’t offer much past this and won’t be as useful as other characters of the same Path or Element.

Arlan	4-Star	Lightning	The Destruction		Arlan is a good character when you build him correctly, but his Skill takes away health every time it’s used, which can be a huge problem in some battles due to Arlan’s limited DPS capabilities, although taking a healer or shielder can help. The big appeal of putting Arlan on your team is that he doesn’t use a Skill Point to use his Skill. This frees up the Skill Points for other party members to use, which can increase your DPS per turn – making him particularly useful in the Forgotten Hall.
Dan Heng	4-Star	Wind	The Hunt		Dan Heng is a great pick to see you through the story, and can help you through a decent amount of the Forgotten Hall and Simulated Universe. He’s good against single-target enemies weak to Wind, and can even help out in multi-target situations, as long as they’re also weak to Wind, or have low enough health to take out in one hit. The only real issues with Dan Heng are that he doesn’t do much else, and his attack potential is limited when compared with 5-Stars. His Skill has the chance of reducing an enemy’s speed, but as this is only for a single-target, and not a guarantee, there are other characters who can do this better against multiple targets.
Hook	4-Star	Fire	The Destruction		Hook’s biggest problem is that other Fire-users exist. While her playstyle is pretty simple (hit with everything you have and inflict Burn), and she’s quicker at immediately damaging enemies at the start of a fight, other Fire characters are so much better in tougher encounters that last longer. Hook’s not a bad team member, she’s just not essential.
Trailblazer	5-Star	Physical	The Destruction		Good survivability and Physical damage in both AOE and single-target situations is about all the Physical version of the Trailblazer offers. Their healing Technique can be useful in the Forgotten Hall and Simulated Universe, but it’s not essential if you have a healer on your team. Generally, any other Physical damage-dealer offers more to your team, but don’t discount the Physical Trailblazer when you need quick AoE Physical Damage.

Honkai Star Rail tier list explained

Understanding how good 5-Star and 4-Star characters can be is useful when deciding which Banner to Warp on, or who to invest your resources into, but keep in mind that having a team of 5-Star characters is not essential to clear content in Star Rail.

It’s more important you build a team around each individual combat scenario than bringing only characters considered S-tier, especially if their abilities don’t sync-up, or the enemies aren’t weak to their Elemental type.

Our tier list factors in how desirable a character is to have in all combat scenarios, not just their ideal set-ups. This covers fighting through story content, taking on challenging bosses, the Simulated Universe, Swarm, and the Forgotten Hall.

Additionally, if there are two characters who perform similar functions, but one does it better, then it’s likely they won’t be in the same tier – but this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use the character in the lower tier!

For example, Huohuo and Bailu are both healers, but we consider Huohuo a better healer because she also recovers Energy for your team, so we’ve placed Huohuo in a higher tier than Bailu. This doesn’t mean you should use Huohuo over Bailu all the time if you have both. You might need Bailu for her Electric attacks instead of Huohuo’s Wind attacks, or for her ability to revive a downed ally.
